Benefit from a Legacy of Mobile Air Conditioning Innovation

Chemours pioneered mobile air-conditioning and has continually driven air-conditioning innovation for nearly a century. This tradition of innovation continues with Opteon™ YF (R-1234yf), the new standard in automotive air conditioning. It’s the preferred refrigerant solution for many global automotive manufacturers. In fact, today 95% of new cars for sale in the US are filled with R-1234yf.

Made in the US, Opteon™ YF (R-1234yf) offers comparable thermodynamic performance to R-134a and similar energy efficiency and capacity—with the benefit of zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and very low global warming potential (GWP).

The AIM (American Innovation and Manufacturing) Act of 2020 mandates a phasedown of production and use of HFCs, including R-134a, over the next 15 years. Automobile and automotive equipment manufacturers are looking to make a once-in-a-generation transition. Look to Chemours for expertise and training. As the developer of Freon™, Chemours has the experience to provide technical and industry information needed for a successful move to more sustainable refrigerants, like Opteon™ YF.

SNAP 24 and Commercial Automotive Refrigeration

In 2022, the EPA SNAP (Significant New Alternative Policy) approved, through passage of Rule 24, the use of R-1234yf for mobile air conditioning in off-road (non-road) vehicles. Learn more about why Opteon™ YF is an optimal refrigerant solution for Light Duty vehiclesand Heavy Duty vehicles.

Take a look at our HeavyDuty QuickGuidefor more about the HFC transition for off-road automotive equipment.

R-134a and R-1234yf FAQs

  • Can R-134a be used in an R-1234yf system?

No. R-1234yf is a mildly flammable, A2L refrigerant, and has system components designed to enhance safety given that difference. R-1234yf offers emission credits toward light-duty GHG compliance goals; replacing YF with a higher GWP refrigerant like HFC-134a is considered tampering with an emissions-related component under the Clean Air Act. While the performance is similar, it is illegal to use 134a in R-1234yf systems.

  • Are R-134a and R-1234yf fittings the same?

No. R-1234yf has unique, left-handed threaded fittings on hoses, couplers, adapters, and connecting equipment. This was an intentional design choice to discourage accidental or deliberate mixing of refrigerants to protect system components.

  • Is R-1234yf colder than R-134a?

With the addition of an internal heat exchanger in the system and optimized operating conditions, R-1234yf exhibits very similar cooling performance to a 134a baseline system. The normal boiling point of YF is between 3-4 degrees lower than 134a.

  • Can you mix R-1234yf with R-134a?

No. Mixing refrigerants amounts to cross-contamination. There are blends of refrigerants, manufactured to offer specific performance benefits, but system components are specifically designed for these mixtures. In addition to the risk of degrading system components and violating the Clean Air Act, service recovery machines can not handle mixtures of refrigerants and shut down during operation. It is critical to use the refrigerant designed for a given system as specified on the label.

  • What happens if you put r134a in a r1234yf system?

Mixing R134a in an R1234yf system can lead to reduced cooling efficiency and potential damage to the compressor. It's crucial to use the recommended refrigerant for optimal performance and to avoid system malfunctions.
