KOMPAS.com - Apakah sebelumnya anda pernah melihat sebuah percobaan pasta gigi gajah? Ya itu merupakan salah satu percobaan kimia tentang "katalis" yang dapat dilakukan di rumah.

Sebuah reaksi pemecahan hidrogen peroksida biasanya akan terpecah menjadi oksigen dan air dalam reaksi yang relatif lambat.

Namun, sebuah ragi jika ditambahkan pada reaksi ini akan mempercepat reaksi sehingga gumpalan seperti pasta gigi akan menjulang ke atas dengan cepat.

1. Katalis alami yang digunakan dalam pembuatan asam sulfat adalah…

Jawaban: Vanadium pentaoksida (V2O5)

Dilansir dari BBC, proses kontak adalah metode produksi asam sulfat pekat dari sulfur trioksida. Proses kontak dimulai dengan pembakaran belerang cair atau sulfur dalam suatu ruang tertutup.

Semua reaksi pembakaran akan selalu terlibat oksigen, tanpa adanya oksigen kita tidak dapat membakar zat apapun.

Proses pembakaran belerang tersebut menghasilkan SO2 atau sulfur dioksida yang kemudian direaksikan kembali dengan oksigen untuk membentuk sulfur trioksida (SO3).

Proses pembuatan SO3 ini berlangsung sangat lambat sehingga laju reaksinya harus dinaikkan dengan katalis berupa Vanadium oksida (V2O5) pada suhu tinggi yaitu 450°C dan tekanan yang dinaikkan hingga 2 atm.

Terlihat pada persamaan reaksinya adalah reaksi bolak-balik. Jika reaksi tersebut tidak menaikkan suhu, tekanan dan menggunakan katalis vanadium pentaoksida, sulfur trioksida yang telah terbentuk akan kembali terurai menjadi sulfur dioksida dan oksigen.

Sehingga pembuatan asam sulfat tidak dapat dilanjutkan. Sulfur trioksida yang dihasilkan kemudian direaksikan dengan air untuk mendapatkan atom Hidrogen pembentuk asam.

Larutan Asam sulfat (H2SO4) yang dihasilkan sangatlah pekat dan korosif, juga memiliki produk sampinganberupa awan asam sulfat yang berbahaya karena dapat menimbulkan hujan asam jika lepas ke atmosfer.
