Tom Hardy Reveals His True Feelings for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

Tom Hardy left The Wasteland far behind and in the capable hands of Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth with regard to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. As most fans already know, Hardy portrayed the titular character in the 2015 action-adventure Mad Max: Fury Road. And even though Hardy hasn’t seen the latest installment in the apocalyptic film saga, the actor believes Furiosa is “bound to be special” because it's under the care of the franchise's co-creator and director George Miller. Hardy said in an interview (via Variety) while promoting his upcoming crime drama, The Bikeriders:

“I’m sure that Furiosa will be a tremendous success, as rightly George, Anya and Chris well deserve. I’m a huge Mad Max fan and Fury Road fan and Furiosa fan. I haven’t seen the film, but I know it’s bound to be special because it’s come from George.”

The actor also spoke about how much making Fury Road meant to him during the same sit-down. Hardy said:

“Fury Road was a great experience, and it absolutely was one of the most important things that ever happened to me in my career, ever. I’m grateful for that. And I think George Miller is a genius, and the whole crew with everybody was amazing. I learned an awful lot on that film.”

Tom Hardy’s Approach to His Bikeriders’ Character

While Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga struggles at the box office, former franchise star Tom Hardy is shifting gears over the good ole summertime in the upcoming film from writer/director Jeff Nichols, The Bikeriders. Hardy portrays the leader of the Midwestern motorcycle club known as the Vandals. And when it comes to playing the Vandal's Johnny, Hardy’s approach is making the guy seem like a “tragic clown.” The actor said in the same interview:

“You look straight away at a biker movie and think, ‘Oh, it’s leather. It’s sexy. The music’s great. The hair’s great.’ The obvious choice is to play to all of these. So, the obvious choice for somebody like me is to go to the counterpoint of all those. This guy is a tragic clown."

Hardy continued:

“Where’s the pathetic element? Where’s the wretch? Where’s the embarrassing moments? Where’s the weaknesses? I need to flesh this guy out. Why is the voice a little bit creepy? Why is it a little like Bugs Bunny? What can we imbue this stud with that’s so un-studly that I can identify with it? Because I’m not that!”

The Bikeriders is based on the book of the same name by author and photographer Danny Lyon. An all-star cast joins Hardy in the crime drama, including Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, Norman Reedus and Mike Faist, who is coming fresh off of his sports romance with Zendaya and Josh O'Connor, Challengers.
