But where to go? This is our itinerary to discover the historical cinemas of Florence. We have deliberately not mentioned the big multiplexes such as Uci Cinema or The Space, which you can always find, but we wanted to focus on non-canonical programs, art-house cinemas.

Cinema La Compagnia

The Cinema La Compagnia was born as Cinema Modernissimo in 1921 and was subsequently remodeled by the architect Adolfo Natalini between 1984 and 1987. Today it has become the House of Cinema and Festivals of Tuscany, the ideal place for those who love not only films, but also documentaries, experimentation, reviews, previews and audiovisual culture in all its forms. Until October 3, it also hosts some shows of Middle East Now 2021.

Historical cinema of Florence opened in April 1955 with "Le ragazze di San Frediano" by Valerio Zurlini and based on a novel by Vasco Pratolini. Until its transformation into a multiplex, it was the largest cinema in Florence! Built from the beginning to be a cinema, its amphitheater shape allows an excellent view from every seat. In the summer of 2000 the place was renovated to accommodate two comfortable rooms, the Ruby room and the Sapphire room, equipped with all comforts. Between 2010 and 2012 these were digitized, in particular the Sapphire Room which is now equipped with a 3D system on a high performance screen with disposable glasses.
